Filli's Search

Courtyard
A busy, bustling place, this courtyard still gives the impression of order, and
routine. The main door to the stables lies directly opposite the path to the
valley, and are plainly made. A smaller, iron gate hides in their shadow,
leading into the quieter Training ring. On the opposite side, a well-worn trail
wanders off to the pastures. Worn paving stones line the ground, providing a
smooth floor for the courtyard, discouraging any greens from taking up residence
near the hall. Nearby, a pair of lonely hitching posts sandwitch a picturesque
well and trough between them.
The area is mostly well-swept, but could use another quick pass with a broom.
It is a summer afternoon.
On the ledge above the large doorway is one firelizards.
You see JonBob, Herder Gather Booth, and Oyasumi here.
You notice Kabes asleep here.

Kita quietly pads in from the center of the valley.

Ndi stalks in from the center of the valley.

Filli stands cleaning out one of the water buckets, humming a little song to
herself. A soft sound of brisles rubbing over bucket can be heard.

Ndi stomps into the courtyard, amber eyes gleaming. "Kiiiita, why can't we just
steal'm? It's not like anyone's gonna notice… hey!" The girl turns to stare
at a passing drudge, meanwhile peeling off already sweat-soaked gloves.
"Eavesdropping is bad. Didn't your mommy ever tell you that? Go away. And
/well/, Kita?"

Filli stops scrubbing at the sound of voices, green eyes glance about as she
catches part of the sentences. Not like someone can't hear her clear in the
hall. She stands up dusting the hay and bits of dirt off of her, "Something I
can do for you?" she ask in her normal polite voice.

"We can't steal'm, as you so graciously put it, because technically they're not
ours. I know they're wild, but we really should ask the Herders, I mean after
all, the beasts are on their land," sighs Kita in exasperation, looking for all
the world that she'd much rather be somewhere else than with another slightly
tetchy rider, the mood probably because of the Istan heat. Sharding leathers.
Good for flying, bad for walking. The brownrider raises her eyes to the poor
recently abused drudge, and manages a smile through her sweat. "Don't mind
her," Kita shrugs, motioning to Ndi. "Or me for that matter. We've been
walking too far in the heat. Actually," she muses thoughtfully, "you may be
able to help us?" Kita rubs her chin in thought at the question, looking to Ndi
for approval of the idea.

The drudge quivers under Ndi's cold amber glare, edging away slightly before
turning around and pointing at Filli for Kita's benefit. "I dunno 'bout any
beasts… ask her." And with that, he runs off, sack of dirty dishes clattering
along behind him.

Ndi just blinks as the drudge flees before her, torn between laughing
triumphantly and setting the somewhat familiar resolution of being nicer to
people for the millionth time. "Um……. oh. Yeah, no snitching critters from
nobody without asking somebody. Like her." And the amber gaze turns to rest
expectantly on Filli.

Filli nods softly and glances at the two. Waiting for the question she dose not
quite a bit about the beasties as Ndi called them, "I'll be happy to help if I
can." she says moving her long black hair away from her face, "What do you need
to know?

"Oh..well that was useful," Kita comments dryly, hands on hips as she glares at
the spot of drudge slowly dwindling in the distance. "Just how did you look at
him anyway?" she asks, turning her uncharacteristic glare to Ndi. Sharding
weather. Either that, or Kita's been hanging around with Elle too much, and her
demeanor is beginning to run off on the brownrider. Kita turns and eyes the
knot on Filli's shoulder, and nods, as if satisfied of the girl's status. "We
have been sent to ask if the Herder Hall may be able to tithe one of their bucks
to the Weyr…Ista, of course, to help replenish the herds a little. With eggs
on the sands and future weyrlings in the works, the stocks may become somewhat
depleted," Kita adds, looking over to Ndi to finish the question.

"Go on." Ndi kind of jerks her chin at Kita, urging her to keep on talking. At
the lack of response within a half a second, the greenrider's innate urge to
talk conquers her lethargy. "Weell, we saw some wild herds off in the Gather
Meadow, you see, and they looked really cool, but they didn't belong to anyone.
And we were - no, I was gonna steal them because they don't belong to anyone
" this punctuated with a brief glance at Kita "— but /she/ didn't wanna, so
now we have to ask, and so can we steal them?"

Veer blinks in from ::between::!

Kita's jaw drops at the other rider's complete lack of subtlety, clapping a hand
to her forehead and shaking her head back and forth. Gritting her teeth, the
brownrider continues to sweat and attempts to put the question a little more
diplomatically. "We were wondering if we may perhaps have the wild herds we saw
transported to the weyr, so as not to deplete your stocks." Kita glances over
to the direction they came, the distant specks of two dragons shimmering in the
afternoon heat. "Our dragons are not too far from them, keeping an eye
out..hopefully not eating," is added under her breath.

"Ooh!" Ndi's eyes light up in excitement at that — another person to show
Estsanth to, another person to try to bully into believing that the tiny green
is actually a gold queen painted green, another person for the dragon to sit on.
"Yeah, yeah, come take a look. You can, uh, tell us whether we can steal the
herds or not!"

Filli nods softly, "Okay, If I know they are wild then the Herders would be
happy to give them to the Weyr." she says with a smile.

Kita shoots Ndi a last, glaring look, shaking her head in mild disgust at her
lack of diplomacy before turning and striding to the pair of dragons in the
distance. Young riders. Green ones at that. Aie.

Ndi tactlessly glares back at Kita (luckily, the brownrider's facing the other
way now) then follows, waving imperiously with two bright orange wherhide gloves
at Filli, indicating that she ought to follow. Or else.

Kita heads out into the valley.

Filli nods and is use to this sort of stuff it reminds her of one of her
masters. She moves to follow the two riders.

Ndi heads out into the valley.

You head out into the valley.

Hold Valley
You stand amid the whispering, waving grasses of the Ista Hold valley. The
grassy plain is framed on the north and south by stands of tropical trees.
Along the southern edge of the valley lies the Herdercraft's Istan
establishment, surrounded by several fenced-off areas that serve as the hold's
pastures. Below, as the valley slopes downward to the east and the sea, the
Hold's gather grounds are a wider grassy area, usually unpopulated except during
gathers. To the west, the valley ascends and narrows into the ridge trail
leading into the mountains.
Gliding around is Sploink.

Gather Meadow
You are standing in a wide grassy area that spreads out before you. It rises
gradually to meet the hold valley in the west. A road continues through the
field over the rise to the Hold's cliff and comes down in the north to the main
gather square. To the south you can see a small waterfall tumbling down the
hillside, which gathers into a stream and runs toward the sea.
It is a summer afternoon.
On the beach, you see Magnolth and five people.

You enter the west end of the gather meadow.

Filli follows closely behind. She spots the heard and starts looking for a brand
of marking of some sort. "I think you are right, These look to be wild." she
says counting the number of beast. She move down toward one to make sure.

All heat is temporarily forgotten as Kita runs up to greet her dragon, lovingly
throwing her arms around his neck. She hasn't been away from him for long, but
it seems like forever. Delightedly she nuzzles his neck, her muffled laugh
coming from within as she responds to some comments of his. "Yes yes you did
very well, not eating one. But we may be able to have some taken to the weyr,
so you can eat all you want! But first we must have this Herder's
approval..whose name I don't know…" This last comment causes Kita to turn,
peering at Filli in curiosity. One eye is somehow kept on Ndi, watching her
intently. Kita is the older, more mature, more experienced rider, after all ;)

Filli nods softly making her way up to the others, "Yup they are wild." she says
with a smile, "HerderCraft is happy to give them to the Weyr" she says and rubs
her hands together, "I'm Filli By the way." she says offering her hand.

Ndi, too, rushes up to Estsanth, but for different reasons. "Hey, you, um…
Herder person? Look, isn't she so pretty and graceful and beautiful and regal?"
In response, the green nudges her rider with her nose and sneezes. "Shush,
Estie, you gotta act smart and princessy, and licking and sniffing strangers
isn't princessy," is hurriedly whispered, while an angelic smile graces Ndi's
dark, narrow face while she edges slowly away from Kita's field of vision. "So,
uh, yeah, they're wild? Good, so me and Estie-the-beautiful can steal'm,
right?"

Kita merely sighs, throwing both her her hands and glance skywards to the air in
resignation. Some riders will never change. The brownrider leans against her
nuzzling dragon with one arm, watching the proceedings with an amused glance,
her gaze faintly tolerant and the green and rider's antics. "Oh hush you," Kita
grins, playfully swiping her dragon's hide. "Don't encourage her. Estsanth
does /not/ need to know you think her colour attractive." Sighing dramatically,
Kita looks skyward once more. "Who sends me on these errands with greenriders?"
Raising her voice slightly, Kita checks with the unamed Herder. "Uh…yeah, so
are they wild?"

Filli nods softly to Ndi, "She is indeed beautiful." she says and looks at Kita
and nods, "They are Wild." she says looking back at them agian, "Good thing you
riders spotted them or they could have made a real mess too."

Ndi swells with pride at the comment, brushing her short frayed hair back with a
triumphant smile. "It is, isn't it? We prevented a real mess. Oohh…. I'm so
proud. Hey, Estie, where're you going?" Amber eyes follow the green as she
lumbers forth, the 'rider's slow mind not really understanding. "No, wait,
Estie!" The dragon turns her head in question. "You didn't ask Filli. Filli,
can Estie sniff you?"

Filli looks at the dragon and stands there why would she care if the dragon
sniffed her. Just as long as they dont nibble she will be fine, "Sure."

Kita frowns a little, moving off her dragon to get a clearer look at what
'Estie' may be doing. However, removing her weight from her dragon's side
allows him to move without disrupting his rider, and he approaches the other
side of the Herder, eyes bright and hunting. Gently, his enormous nostrils
flare and constrict as he inhales her scent, warm sweet dragon breath whuffling
all over poor Filli the Herder. Regardless of Ndi's past blunt behaviour, Kita
slides along beside her. "What do you think," Kita smiles, having seen this a
few times before, and having a hunch at the situation. "We come for herds, and
end up being on Search?"

Filli smiles softly as the dragons sniff her. She is not afraid but just finds
it a little funny to be in the middle of two rather large dragons. She stands
there her green eyes shining brightly. This is the closest she has ever been to
a dragon in a long time.

"Hm? What's that, Esti— I mean, Kita? Oh, Search? Oh, um." Ndi stutters
loudly, blinking at her happily sniffing dragon. "Is it bad for her health to
be sniffing people all the time like that? And Search. Search Search Search
Search…. well, Estie likes her. She says she smells like redfruit." A
decisive nod. And that's that.

Filli glances at the riders, "What?" she ask with a raised eyebrow catching
being said to smell
Kita unfolds her arms from across her chest, smiling a little. Always nice to
brighten up a stifling afternoon with a new Candidate. Hopefully. "Yes,
redfruit," Kita confirms, more for
Filli's benefit than anyone elses. "Our dragons like the smell of you, and
quite frankly..I don't think I'd be able to tear Djarreth away from you at the
moment." Never has a comment been said so true. For Djarreth is just about
wrapping his tail around the poor girl, not wanting her to get away. Her grin
widening, Kita snaps to attention, her voice assuming the timbre of briefly
assumed authority. "Herder Senior Apprentice Filli. Djarreth and Estsanth deem
you worthy. There are a clutch of eggs warming on the sands at Ista. Will you
Stand as a Candidate for this clutch?" No name yet..oh well, title will do for
the moment.

Filli giggles softly as the tail wraps around her and she can't help but laugh.
Then she stops me stand.. she nods softly, "Yes." she says trying not to sound
to happy.

Kita's smile turns into a beam of delight. "Wonderful!" she grins, clapping her
hands together. Djarreth echoes these sentiments, gently pulling the herder a
little closer, his eyes flashing with delight. "We have to go now. If you have
any things you wish to bring with you, grab them now, and quickly. Anything
more that takes time can be delivered by a rider at another time. Ready to go?"

Filli nods, "Yeah." she says having basiclly what she needs she can take care of
the rest later. She smiles agian sorta in shock this is worse than when she got
promoted to a Sr. Apprentice.

Kita continues to grin stupidly at the girl's shock. This is one of the best
parts of Search. Grasping ahold of Djarreth's straps, she hauls herself onto
his back, reaching down to offer Filli a hand. "Ever ridden adragonback
before?"

Kita clambers up Djarreth's neck and settles in between two neckridges.

Filli nods softly, "When they had to air lift me to the healers after falling in
a cave." she says with a grin, "And a few other times." she reminds herself to
explain that later and reaches up to take the riders hand

You clamber up Djarreth's neck and set yourself between two neckridges.

Djarreth [Gather Meadow]
Sunlight's brilliant warmth casts its radiant beam, burnishing a golden brown
bulk with relentless might. Scintillating topaz glints bespeckle his stately
muzzle and dust heavy eyeridges; they are fiery sparks upon a field of sullied
amber that dissipates down the length of his hardy neck. Burgeoning muscles
ripple magnificently over a youthful form, adding robust swells to an
extraordinary length crested with trenchant gilt-streaked ridges. Body's tawny
richness shimmers with honeyed browns, blanching to an ivory-veined khaki along
a rounded belly, gradually fading to a sun-bleached teak at talons' hardened
crescent, tail's spade tip, and wings' distant point. Sturdy spars — splayed
rays of ethereal gold — set expansive canopy of gossamer-thin fingersails,
further building upon this gentle giant's august appearance.
Astride Djarreth is Kita.
Djarreth seems to be listening.

"Oooer..that mustn't have been good," Kita rambles on, leaning behind her to
secure Filli's straps. Task done, straps secure, Kita turns back to the front,
patting Djarreth's hide. "Okay happy fellow..yes yes, you found another," she
grins. "Let's go!"

You take off.

You wing your way over the Ista Hold complex. Below, the main hold's wide
courtyard faces east, over the ocean. Just north of that lies the Hold's main
beach, the white sands often crowded with holders enjoying the sun and surf.
Turquoise waters from the hold cove roll up to lap on the shore. Just inland
from the main beach are the Hold's main gather meadow and racetracks.

a manmade waterfall sheets down the north wall of the bowl, tumbling into a

both human and dragon, have wandered over it dozens of times a day. Further up
in the northwest corner of the bowl is the waterfall, tumbling out of the Weyr

Expertly vaulting from her dragon's back, Kita loosens Filli's straps to allow
her to do the same. "Welcome to Ista Weyr Filli, although you may have been
here before," she grins, sweeping her hands wide to include the entire bowl.
"If you'll just follow me, I'll take you into the Candidate Barracks where you
can make yourself at home, and introduce you to the other candidates." Starting

You go into the living cavern.

Living Cavern
The smooth, rounded walls of the vast living cavern sweep upward from an oval
base, two dragonlengths long and one wide, large enough to seat every member of
the Weyr at mealtimes. The soft blackness of the lava which forms these caverns
swallows glowlight, so shelves for glowbaskets abound, dotting the walls every
three or four paces and casting gentle greenish light up toward the sparkles of
gold volcanic glass embedded in the ceiling. Ancient lustrous tables run along
the long axis of the cavern, and at the far end is the raised dais and high
table, where the Weyrleaders and their honored guests eat during formal
occasions. Behind the high table, the Weyr's symbol is chiseled into the stone:

Alister makes a sound similar to a…squeak? and slips back into the chair she'd

least. Tiny nose is wrinkled as she watches the goings-on, shaking her head from
side to side as the mud is just smeared everywhere. "Ooh! Wait!" she calls out,
holding her non-burned but still numb hand up in the air toward those that just
entered. "Careful! It's wet, and we're, err, they're trying to clean it!"

Halic smiles demurely from the door, eyes flickering with curious amusement over
Kiiran with his mop…Ali with her injury, or is that binding 'round her hand
part of her clothing?…Loeree and Arc in their element, desperate
management…then zooming in on the one giving him orders…"Well now, Arc,"
Halic purrs, "How might you be right now? And how's Zidon?"

Kita stides in in three quick steps, excitement painted across her face as she
sees the multitide of other candidates. However, the brownrider doesn't notice
the wet floor. "Hey everyone! I'd like to introduce you to your newest
candidate, Fiiiiiiii-!" Taking one step too many, Kita slips and lands on her
back, leathers sliding her across the wet floor. She comes to rest at Alister's
feet, to whom Kita gazes up at with some wry amusement at her predicament. "Uh
yes..thanks for warning me."

Kiiran does not look 'deliciously feminine', thank /you/. Unfortunately, he's
just as perceptive as he is masculine- which is to say, not much- and he
certainly flirts with females. "Oh, that's wonderful. I think you must be a
natural at this." Beamk, beamk. He gives another swop of the mop, splattering a
light sprinkle of grime across the caverns' north end. And dangerously close to
the newcomer. And going for the long-distance record in Olympic mop-flinging,
it's Ista's finest, candidaaaaate Kiiran!

Filli trys to keep from busting up in laughter. She looks at Kita and tilts her
head to the side and checks to see if the rider is okay.

Loeree looks up at Kita hands on a mop, doing her best to clean the rest of the
area, waiting until Kiiran goes /away/ so she can finish up. Not realizeing
she's the only one here not a candidate or rider. Oy.

Alister cringes, cover her eyes with both of her hands as Kita skids across the
floor in her direction. Leaping to her feet, she reaches down with both hands,
quickly pulling the burned one away, to offer her a bit of assistance back to
her feet. "You alright?" she asks the brownrider, a little sheepishly.

Poor poor Archellian is having hysterical fits, unable to believe the fact that
people are making the floor messier in their attempts to clean it. Deep calming
breaths taking in and out, in and out. "I'm cleaning," he states simply to
Halic. Yes that's how he is. Cleaning, though he's not even holding the mop
anymore. Wherever did it get to. "Zidon is here, he's good, gorgeous as ever and
you so much as look at him and I'll rip your eyes out," this delivered coldly as
he regains his sense of self, a smile accompanying the words, "well maybe not,"
a chuckle following that and more vapours as the dragonrider skids. AGHHH!!!!!
Deep, calming breaths.

Kiiran chances to glance out the window along the arc of one of his
record-breaking mop-swipes, and the sun's surprising nearness to the horizon
prompts an equally surprising soprano eek. "Oh, shard it, I missed my thing with
Karnie, he's gonna-" Zoooom. And he's off for the caverns, boots left behind.
Now the candies can get some /real/ cleaning done.

Kiiran goes home.

Kita grunts rather grudgingly, accepting Alister's hand and brushing off her
leathers with a small amount of embarrassment. "What I was /trying/ to say,"
the rider starts again after smiling at Alister with an 'I'm okay' look, "was
I'd like to introduce you to the newest addition to your little group: Filli,
Herder Senior Apprentice!" Kita's smile is now genuine, as she walks towards the
barracks. "Coming?"

Filli nods and gives a small wave to the group, "On my way." she says useing her
long legs to catch up.

Kita quietly pads to the Southern Caverns.

You go to the South Caverns.

South Caverns
Caverns continue to twist and tangle into a labyrinth of ancient tunnels: from
high, soaring, vaulted roofs to nothing more than crawl-space at times the weyr
extends deep into the mountain. Most of the walls are the smooth and glossy
obsidian of ancient volcanoes, dark but for the fickle light of green-tinted
glows. The floor is likewise worn by feet and time to run smooth and unbroken
off to the main caverns to the north, or into the dorms and barracks in the
opposite direction.

Long and low, this large room angles back into the mountain in a near-perfect

volcanic rock and simple earthen tapestries, there is nothing but stark
simplicity in the seemingly endless rows of cots that scatter back into the
shadows. A small clothespress sits at the end of each puce-covered bed — yes,
puce. Every cot sports a rather gaudy and obnoxiously purple cotton coverlet,
leftovers from PranksPast. Boys to the right, girls to the left. Enjoy.

Kita sends a drudge running for a cot. After a few minutes the drudge returns
dragging a big heavy cot for Filli.

Kita holds out her hands, indicating the room with the gorgeous blankets. "This
is your new home, Filli. We're all friendly. If you ever need anything, feel
free to ask. Not as though you'll have time," is added with a wink, and the
rider disappears to engage in some riderly duty.
