Feeding

"At first, young dragons feed almost daily, and then once every three to five days, devouring one or two wherries or a small herdbeast from among the Weyr's flocks." -——Dragonlover's Guide to Pern

This very aptly describes your new lifemate. When they are young, they are voracious eaters. They will frequently and at first you must cut and prepare the meat for them; they do not know how to hunt when they first hatch. Once they begin their growth, they then lose the edge on the hunger and will slowly fall into a more "adult" eating habit.

When they learn to fly, that's when they begin learning how to hunt. The older rider/dragon pairs will take the weyrling pair and teach them both how to hunt, starting small and then working their way up to the larger beasts.
